Compensation

  • The Harvard Graduate Student Union (HGSU – UAW) negotiated 2.8% raises during funding freezes and achieved larger raises than non-unionized workers at Harvard University
  • University of California Academic Workers (UAW Local 4811) has achieved a base salary increase of 151% since 1999 for student workers in California
  • Student Workers of Columbia (UAW Local 2710) negotiated 3% annual raises

International Student Issues

  • UW grad workers, postdocs, and researchers (UAW4121) added an article to their contract for immigration which includes paid leave for immigration appointments and hearings plus the right to reappointment if someone loses work authorization. 
  • Harvard Graduate Students Union (HUGS-UAW 5118) established a $100,000 annual fund for international student workers to use toward costs associated with immigration and maintenance of legal working status in the United States.
  • UC Postdocs (UAW5810) won increased rights for international postdocs by ending UC’s practice of denying health benefits for many international postdocs and ensuring equal treatment regardless of immigration status.
